Products to Control the Effects of Ammonia & Nitrite Problems and Beef Up the Biological Filter. Fish cannot live very long in a pond that has no nitrifying cycle in place. The ammonia and nitrites will kill the fish. The trick is to prevent ammonia and nitrite spikes from occurring by installing a proper biological filter where good bacteria can thrive and create the nitrifying cycle.

If you have a quartz sleeve make sure and clean it with acetone when you change your bulb to truly have a clean quartz sleeve. As a general rule of thumb, you should change your UV bulb after about 8,000 hours use. This is about once a year.
