Ammonia is a toxic by-product of fish metabolism, and is one of the major causes for fish loss in new pond setups. Overstocking and overfeeding fish can result in harmful ammonia buildup. It is important to keep an eye on ammonia levels when starting a new fish pond setup and in the spring when fish feeding begins. Ammonia levels indicate biological filter activity.
In new pond setups, the ammonia level may shoot up to 10ppm or more, but should drop as the biological filter becomes established. Elevated ammonia levels do not automatically mean high nitrite levels, so test nitrites separately.
