SustainRain Rain and Garden Systems
Conservation and protection of our fresh water supplies comes through responsible use and by controlling storm water runoff. Storm water runoff is a major contributor to pollutants found in creeks, streams, rivers lakes and oceans. There are many forms of pollution that are carried by storm water: silt and sediment, fertilizer, pesticides, motor oil and gasoline, yard waste, soaps, animal waste, heat, etc. Excessive runoff in developed zones creates erosion hazards and soil depletion downstream, as well. Domestic landscaping can have a major impact on storm water management in the urban setting. SustainRain™ Rain Gardens represent a great opportunity not only to help the environment by reducing runoff coming from a property but also to conserve water and build a more sustainable residence.
For this reason, Complete Aquatics has developed a line of SustainRain™ products to help manage and use storm water within the landscape. A traditional Rain Garden is a shallow depression in the yard that is planted with a variety of flowers, shrubs and grasses that don’t mind getting their feet wet. A rain garden can be considered a “bioretention” area, where rain water collected from downspouts, drive ways and patios is filtered, buffered and returned to the environment without negative impact on downstream ecosystems. A Rain Garden is like a biological filter, but instead of filtering a pond, it works for the whole landscape and water cycle system. We have taken this same approach with our SustainRain™ Garden System and taken it one step further by providing a method of capturing rainfall to storage for use throughout the landscape. The system is flexible and can be easily blended into the surroundings.
How much water comes of impervious surfaces during a storm even that needs to be managed or harvested?
Once inch of rainfall on a 1,000 sq. ft. surface is equal to 625 gallons of water. This means, a region that receives 25 inches of rainfall a year would have 15,575 gallons available for harvest and use.
Benefits of Rain Gardens
In addition to buffering and filtering storm water runoff and helping with ground water recharge, SustainRain™ Rain Gardens provides many other benefits as well:
- Specific plantings will provide natural habitats for wildlife, increase the number and diversity of song birds, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
- Provide a very attractive and creative landscape alternative to traditional lawns.
- Require less maintenance than lawns because they do not need to be mowed, fertilized or frequently irrigated.
- Increase property values with creative and unique landscape elements
- Reduce storm drain overload and flooding when adopted on a community or neighborhood scale.
